My Love Affair with Health & Fitness

Transformation #1

It all started in August of 1999, at the age of 37. When I made a decision that would ultimately change the course of my entire life.

That decision was to hire a Personal Trainer.  At the time, I was a mother of four young children ages 14, 12, 8, and 3 years old. I was quite unhappy with my “after-babies” body and completely and utterly exhausted, mentally, emotionally and physically from battling to stay alive in my unhappy marriage of 16 years with an abusive narcissist.

 One day I sat down and made a list of all the things that were going wrong in my life and needed to change. Most of the things on the list I had no control over like my marriage, and his abusive behavior but I did find one thing I could change on my own.

I could change my body. I could take control of that one thing and run with it.

I wouldn’t say I was necessarily overweight, but I definitely had some post baby weight to lose and was frustrated that I couldn’t tuck my shirt into my pants anymore. I thought I needed to lose about 10 lbs. and that would do the trick.

I consulted with my friend, Phil Merrill, a P.A. (Physician’s Assistant) and he recommended a nutrition book he was using for his own weight loss. He had just lost 25 lbs. and said, “it has to do with controlling your Insulin”.  I responded, “what is Insulin”?

He said, “go get the book it will explain everything. “
I left his office and headed straight to Barnes & Noble to get the book and started reading. Boy did it ever change my life!

I felt like a wet sponge soaking up all this information I had been thirsting for, for years but didn’t know where to find. I couldn’t put it down! It was like someone had opened the top of my head and was dumping in all this information and it all made total sense to me.

Over the next 3 months I started implementing the nutritional information that was presented, chapter by chapter. and things were going well. But when I got to the last chapter, it recommended doing resistance training. Crap! That meant going to the gym and lifting weights. Ugg…

I was the gal who regularly attended Step Bench Class three times a week rain or shine, that was my deal, not weightlifting.

I was totally intimidated by the thought of using the weights as I didn’t know the first thing about how to use them, as girls weren’t allowed in the weight room when I was in High School. and I was also terrified of using them in front of all the grunting, sweaty guys at the gym.

But I was bound and determined to follow the book’s advice, so after a month of running around my neighborhood trying to build up a little heart capacity, I hired a personal trainer at my local Gold’s Gym, Jimmy.

Little did I know I was starting a journey that would not only change me as a person but give me a new career path. With his help, I transformed not only my body, but my entire LIFE!

Our first day of training I explained to Jimmy, my 22-year-old, college football player, personal trainer, that I was following my own nutrition plan from my doctor, so I didn’t want any nutritional to advise from him. I said just train me how to use all this equipment because my book says resistance training is the next step. He flipped through my nutrition book and said ok, fine with me. 

I can proudly say He did an outstanding job teaching me good form, proper use of each piece of equipment and the power of sets and reps.

I started my weight loss journey at 165 lbs.
I watched in amazement, week after week as my body transformed and the resistance training and good nutrition reshaped and sculpted my body to a level that exceeded even my best high school weight and size.

In High School I was very active as a member of the Girls Track Team and Captain of the Girls Gymnastics’ Team and was a slender 5’8″, weighted 120 lbs. and wore a size 8 jeans.

 I now weighed more than I did in High School, but now it was all muscle and I was 4 sizes smaller. Truth be told, muscle really does weight more than fat.

During my 90 Day Transformation as I grew stronger and more confident with my personal trainer cheerleader cheering me on three days a week, I started to realize I had become a boiled frog.  You know what I mean.

Over the years I had emotionally shut down and become totally numb to the constant pain that was dished out daily in my marriage.  As I started finding pieces and parts of myself I had given away or lost  in the marriage in order to ” keep the peace”, or “not start another argument” I became stronger and stronger and I began to understand this was going to be a monumental transformation for me inside and out. And it was!

This experience was the catalyst that catapulted me to higher ground and gave me the strength, courage and confidence within myself to finally leave my broken, dysfunctional and abusive marriage.

 It literally saved my life, and the lives of my kids from years of future abuse. 

 At the end of my 12 weeks working with my trainer and following my nutrition book from my doctor I was thrilled with my results!!With Jimmy’s help, and my sound nutritional plan I completely transformed my life and my body!

In 12 Weeks I Achieved the following:

Dropped size 13 jeans to a size 2 skirt
Lost 30 lbs.
Lost 17 ¼ inches
Lowered my body fat% from 21% to 17%
Lowered my Cholesterol 49 points. 232 to 183
Lowered my HDL/Chol risk from 4.1 down to 3.0
Dropped Triglyceride levels 38 points. From 75 to 37 into the excellent range

At the end of my 12 weeks I not only looked and felt fantastic, but I had fallen in love with weight training too and that is how my Love Affair with Health and Fitness began.

 Shortly thereafter, in 2000, I received my Certification as a Certified Personal Trainer and stepped into that very rewarding and passionate world of helping others transform their lives too!

I immediately started training new clients at my local Gold’s Gym and built up a successful client base helping many of my clients achieve life changing transformations.

 I found complete joy and happiness teaching each client how to take care of their body, what they needed to do to get all their ducks in a row so they’re body would allow the healthy weight loss.

 Within a year, I started competing and winning in local novice Natural Body Building Competitions to keep myself hungry and looking for ways to continually refine and sculpt my body. I found there is always room for improvement, no matter what your goal is or where you’re at.

The next few years, I became fasinated with solving modern-day health issues plaguing us today and continued to veraciously study and research how to resolve these with diet, exercise and lifestyle changes. In doing so, I figured out what it takes to unravel the health mess, and how to get all the ducks in the right order to obtain a healthy body weight and maintain our optimal health and fitness.

 In 2013 I earned my C.N.C. Certified Nutritional Consultant Certification through AANC.

In 2015 I earned an additional Nutritional Therapist Certification Accredited through The Health Sciences Academy.

And I will soon be graduating with  my Dr. of Naturopathy at Trinity School of Natural Health.

  But, that’s not the end of my Transformation Story. 

  Transformation #2 Menopause Mastery

 I was able to maintain my weight loss successes for the next ten years into my late 40’s, but soon started noticing some small but annoying weight gain, a little here, a little there so I worked harder, paid closer attention to my diet, lifestyle and stress. During this time, I watched my sisters battle menopause symptoms, hot flashes, night sweats and major mode swings. I saw how miserable they were with seemingly no answers on how to cure or fix they’re symptoms.  My research paid off and I gained a huge knowledge base on this subject. Then as I hit my 50th Birthday, Menopause hit me like a ton of bricks. BUT I can happily say, I was prepared. Within a few months I had rebalanced my hormones and was able to lose the menopause weight gain and whip my body back into its normal healthy state and size.
